Whitburn sign two new players

Whitburn has welcomed two new players as the West Lothian band gears up for concert and contest performances in the coming months.

Andrew McMillan has joined the band’s horn section, while Colin Bennie has joined the back row cornet team.

Andrew, 18, is the current Principal Tenor Horn player of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland. He grew up performing with Campbeltown Brass, where he has played since he was nine years old.

He was the Scottish Junior Solo Champion in 2015 and 2016, and the Intermediate Champion in 2020. As part of his prize, at the invitation of SBBA, he performed a solo spot at the Scottish Brass Band Championships at the Perth Concert Hall.

Andrew joins Whitburn on First Horn as he relocates to Glasgow, where he will commence his studies in tenor horn at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Colin joins Whitburn on Second Cornet after performing for many years with the Bon Accord Band.

Highlights from his time with the Aberdeen-based outfit include representing Scotland at the European Brass Band Championships in Linz, a tour to the Northern Isles and trips to Regensburg and Dublin.

He also performed as part of a concert at Balmoral to mark the Queen’s birthday which also featured singer Katherine Jenkins, and was part of the band that qualified for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain last year.

Charlie Farren, Whitburn Band Chairman, said: “We are delighted that Andrew and Colin have joined Whitburn and all the band are now looking forward to performing again in the coming months on the concert and contest stage.”
